Switching to Latin class, Infrared (or ‘further-on from red’) is the wavelength just beyond the visible spectrum at the red side of the chart. These have longer wavelengths than we can observe. Infrared (IR) is energy emitted by heated objects and has a wavelength of 800 to 1000nm. IR has a number of useful applications, from astronomy to medical applications (remember those COVID point ‘n shoot thermometers?), from your TV remote to meteorology.

Passing through the visible (red, yellow, orange, cyan, blue) at the other end is ultraviolet (‘beyond violet’) that describes the shorter wavelengths. These are described as thermal bridges AKA localised areas where the heat is allowed to flow more easily from warm to cold. IR cameras are a great tool for building professionals to diagnose cold bridges in existing buildings and find solutions for homeowners or building managers.

Thermal bridges can be repeating, like a series of repetitive roof rafters, or isolated examples like a single waste pipe passing through the external wall. Other examples include window reveals or fixings that penetrate the insulation layer, like structural balcony supports. Even metal cavity ties contribute to transferring energy across the wall construction.

There are three ways that heat is transferred:

Conduction – through a solid surface like a solid stone door threshold, a stainless steel glazing spacer bar or a roof rafter that passes from inside to outside.

Convection – via a liquid or gas, so typically this describes heat loss from buildings through ventilation (controlled and uncontrolled gaps and cracks).

Radiation – via electro-magnetic waves. IR allows us to learn from the mistakes of the past and find better solutions.

If we suspect a weakness, without the benefit of x-ray specs, we have two ways of investigating a wall, floor or roof. An intrusive survey will drill a hole, remove a patch of plasterboard or lift a floorboard to check out what lies beneath. This is not always possible or desirable and leaves a trace.

The beauty of thermography is that it is quick and non-destructive, so perfect to use in people’s homes as a first sweep across the external envelope. The rule of thumb is a 10degC difference between internal and external conditions to get helpful data. This means that the thermal imaging season runs from around Oct to March. I’ve found in practice that the start or end of the season, internal imaging is still useful for spotting cold bridges, but the external wall analysis of larger surfaces really needs those cold external temperatures and the heating on inside.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://detail-library.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/02-RB00095X.jpg” alt=”02 RB00095X” title_text=”02 RB00095X” align=”center” admin_label=”Image 02″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” width=”80%” custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text admin_label=”Image Caption” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”16px” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Example of cold draft at sliding door closure.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider color=”#00C4CC” divider_weight=”5px” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” width=”70%” module_alignment=”left” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”3_5,2_5″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”75px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”3_5″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text admin_label=”The Cameras” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The Cameras

There are three types of cameras.
